This is our first time attending Kids Science Fest in Singapore. It's amazing. I am prepared to give super duber explaination to Ee Rynn after her exposure to science in our daily life. Turn out, at every booth, explaination is given in the most simple manner with activity along with it. Wow! Ee Rynn enjoyed herself. Mommy enjoyed herself too!
Besides Kids Science Fest, Genefest is in the same hall. I would think to skip this as I think Ee Rynn is too young to comprehend this term called 'Gene'. I am wrong. The organizer has arranged series of activity that has allowed children to learn about gene. Wow..
Genefest
Aged or Aging
This is a slide and ladder game. Kids were so excited. This games illustrated concept of aging. From this game, children learn about factor that cause aging. Eg: UV exposure & smoking. Children learn ways to slow down aging too, like healthy lifestyle. Ee Rynn had fun rolling the dice. Children should not reach the finishing line because it means they age very fast. It's a fun game.

Ee Rynn wears glove and try to button a shirt. It's difficult. This explains old people has difficulty wearing their shirt. Then Ee Rynn wears a goggle and the exhibitor apply some vaseline on the goggle. Ee Rynn said it's blurr. This explains old people has poor eyesight. By wearing gloves, the movement is restricted. This explains old people is relatively slow.
Habitats at Risk
Children learn the important of oceans, rainforest, rivers and glaciers.
Ee Rynn is fishing. She is saving the animals. It's a simple game. It has broaden children awareness on animal extinction.
Copy-a-cat
Ee Rynn learned about cloning. This allows her to understand that cloning an endangered animal is possible in the event that animal gets extinct.![]() |
Ee Rynn is picking up marble |
These marbles represent cells. Cells include somatic cell and egg cell. These marbles is to be transferred to surrogate mother (cat) and the embryo (marble) will be implanted into her (cat). This is too deep for me. I don't think I can explain in layman term. Ee Rynn is learning it via activity.
Kids Science Fest
The theme is energy. Type of energy includes sound, light, heat, electrical and kinetic energy. Activities and workshops evolve around this theme.
Sound - Pan Flute
Ee Rynn made pan flute. She used straws, lolly-sticks and plasticine. This pan flute is made by straws of different lengths. Different lengths will give different pitch. It's fun when she blows it.
Light - Polarised Light Mosaic

Tape is cut into small pieces and tape them on to the polarising sheet. Design them at different angles. Hold this polariser over the LCD screen and rotate to produce a mosaic of different colours.

According to the booklet given, the kinetic energy of the spinning of the dowel is stored in the elastic band as elastic potential energy. I can't explained this. Ee Rynn learned it.
Marble Machines

This is one of the track for marble machine. Various materials used to allow marble go through a series of obstacles. According to the booklet given, when marble is placed at a height above ground, it has Gravitational Potential Energy. This potential to fall due to gravity will allow its energy to cause something to happen. This energy is converted into something else like sound, heat or causing another object to move. This is a very interesting ways to allow children to see energy can be in different form. She learned it.
Pop!Sticks Domino - Mass Activity
This booth is showing the stored potential energy when all the ice cream sticks are combine together. When it's release, its stored potential energy is shown when all the ice cream stick pops up.
Cardboard Automata Workshop

This activity illustrates friction and movement between the cardboard cam and the cardboard cam follower will cause the shaft to move up and down and round and round.
Overall, it's a fun experience even for adults. I enjoyed learning along the way. The girls are having fun. Learning science in a fun way.
